Technically, the first day of spring was two week ago. Even though it doesn’t feel like it where I’m living quite yet. I live in a very cold place for someone that has the tropics in her blood (My parents are from Cuba), so I am very ready for the warm weather that comes with spring.
I love this season because after a winter of cold and grey and what looks like death – flowers start blooming, birds start singing more, the trees get their leaves back and the world seems alive again. Granted, if you live in a warm place already, spring may just seem like a normal day, but there are still subtle changes we can see and enjoy.
This post has some things that I do to start getting my garden ready for pops of color and to attract beautiful little creatures that are on their way.
Flowers are such a great way to bring life to your home. What flower colors do you like best?
When I start preparing flowers for planting in the spring I think about the colors I want to see and the smells I want to experience when I leave my house. Peonies, roses, tulips, are all some of my favorite flowers. They come in so many bright colors and they all have subtle, but lovely smells. So, let’s say that the first step of getting my garden ready is finding flowers I like and plating them.
The second step for me is to find a flower or plant that helps attract butterflies, hummingbirds and honey bees to my garden. These types of flowers come in many colors, so I can find some that go with my favorite flower in step one.
One of my favorite critter attractions is Russian sage. It is a beautiful plant that looks a little like lavender but it attracts so many butterflies and bees that your garden will look alive. When it comes to hummingbirds, I think red. Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red. So I find a flower that is that color, and more than likely you will attract a hummingbird. Or I get a red hummingbird feeder. Those work like a charm!
NOTE: Red dyed hummingbird food for the feeders is not the best for them. Get a red feeder and the clear hummingbird food.
I hope sharing some of the things I like to do to prepare for spring give you come great ideas for your garden. When your garden starts taking shape, post a picture of it and tag @evastwocents. That way we can see your spring masterpiece!!
