Note: This is the story that I mentioned in my post last week. And she is one of the reasons why I got Niki.
I grew up with dogs. My first dog was an Aussie that my dad got my mom while they were dating. She was a darker blue merle with one blue eye, one brown eye, two pointy ears. Her name was Maca (she isn’t in the picture above, but it looks like her). And I have to say that she was one of the best dogs I’ve ever had.
Here is a little background about Maca. When I was born, my parents gave Maca my first hospital blanket. It got home before I did, so she had a few days to get used to my smell. By the time I came home, it was like she knew it was her job to watch over me. My parents tell stories of times that I would be sleeping in my nursery and she would sit right in the threshold of the room. She would let my parents step over her, but if anyone else tried without my parents she would block the door and not let them in.
One night, after my mom had fallen asleep, she says that Maca suddenly jumped on the bed and started nipping at her hands and licking her face. She tried to get her to go lay down, but nothing seemed work. Finally she decided that maybe Maca needed to go outside to use the bathroom.
So, she turned on the light, glanced at my crib, and realized… I had turned blue. Sometime in the night, I have turned on my belly and couldn’t lift my face to breathe.
That night Maca saved my life.
Mami quickly picked me up and helped me breath normally again. As soon as I started to breathe normally and cry, Maca went right back to her bed and lay down.
I thought it was so cool that she had gotten my mom out of bed to see that something was wrong. For ten years after that, Maca was always there and kept being my furry friend. She was faithful and loyal and even as a little girl I knew that when it came to it, she had my back.
