How to Plan a Stress-Free Flight with a Toddler ✈️

Flying with a toddler can feel like preparing for a full-on mission to the moon—but with the right planning, it doesn’t have to be stressful! My daughter are flying solo to Florida while my husband goes on a business trip. It seems a little daunting. This isn’t our first solo trip, but the last time we flew solo she was 4 months old and a lot less mobile than she is now. Knowing what to do now is a little different than when she was a newborn.

Whether you’re a first-time toddler traveler or just looking for new ways to make the journey smoother, here’s my step-by-step guide to help me fly with confidence and as little stress as possible.

1. Choose the Right Flight

Timing is everything when flying with any baby or toddler. If possible, I try to:

✔️ Book a flight that aligns with her nap time or meal time.

✔️ Avoid layovers or long travel days when I fly alone.

✔️ Opt for early morning flights (My daughter tends to be in a better mood between 8 am and 12 pm).

Pro Tip: If your budget allows, purchasing an extra seat for your toddler (instead of flying as a lap infant) gives you more space and flexibility.

2. Pick the Best Seat for Comfort

Where you sit can make a huge difference! Consider:

  • Aisle Seats – Easier access for diaper changes and toddler wiggles.
  • Front of the Plane – Closer to bathrooms and quicker exits.
  • Window Seats – Great for keeping toddlers entertained with the view.

Pick a seat that fits your child’s needs the best.

If traveling with a partner, book an aisle and window seat—middle seats are often left open, and you might score extra space!

3. Pack Smart: Toddler Travel Essentials

You should have a bag packed with must-have toddler items to avoid mid-flight meltdowns. Essentials I like to include:

🎒 Diapers & Wipes – Pack extras in case of delays.

🍼 Snacks & Drinks – Keep hunger at bay with easy-to-eat snacks. (Some flights can accommodate for your child too. You can call ahead to be sure)

🎧 Headphones & Screen Time – Load up a tablet with favorite shows.

🧸 Toys & Activities – Bring sticker books, mess-free coloring, or small puzzles. (Bring something they can’t throw. My daughter loves testing gravity and I need to bring things that she can’t throw. Or rig up her toys with strings that are attached to us.)

👕 Extra Clothes – Accidents happen, so pack an extra outfit for both of you.

🛏️ Blanket or Stuffed Animal – Familiar comfort items help with naps.

4. Make Security & Boarding Easier

Airport security can be overwhelming, but you can make it smoother by:

✔️ Wearing slip-on shoes and packing liquids in an easy-to-reach bag.

✔️ Using a lightweight stroller or baby carrier. Here is a link to my favorite stroller!

✔️ Taking advantage of family-friendly security lines (many airports have them!).

✔️ Boarding early (most airlines allow families with young kids to board first. Take this so you can be settled before the plane is too full).

5. Keep Your Toddler Comfortable During the Flight

Flying is a new experience for toddlers, so make it as comfortable as possible:

✈️ Help with Ear Pressure: Offer a pacifier, sippy cup, or snacks during takeoff and landing.

🛏️ Encourage Naps: Use a travel pillow or blanket to create a cozy spot.

🎶 Calm Meltdowns: Bring their favorite lullaby, a quiet toy, or even a new surprise toy for distraction.

Final Thoughts

Flying with a toddler doesn’t have to be a stressful experience—it’s all about preparation, flexibility, and patience! With a well-packed bag, smart seating choices, and a few tricks to keep your little one entertained, you can make the journey smoother for both of you.
