I once heard a saying, “Perspective is most often the key to happiness.” But is this really true? How can perspective affect happiness?
The dictionary definition of perspective is “a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.” So then, perspective is your point of view or the way you look at things.
Point of view, or perspective, is like having a pair of glasses. Without them, you see one way, with them you see another way. You choose to put them on, and they change what you look at things—is the glass half full or half empty, the weather partly cloudy or sunny, life good or bad. They are both true perspectives, but which one would you choose
There are positive and negative perspectives. If you have a negative perspective you will see, even the happiest thing—like a puppy or a pretty flower negatively. On the other hand, if you have a positive perspective, the largest obstacle or inconvenience will have a hard time bringing you down. Choosing the right one is important to your happiness.
The way you look at something, changes how you react to it. This must be what the saying means. That the reason why perspective is the key to happiness is because if you see something positively, you will be happier, no matter what that is.
This may be something that you are already familiar with, but having a little reminder is helpful and it gives us the nudge we may need. Our perspective is something that only we have control over. You choose whether it is positive or negative. What glasses are you wearing?
